Gladiator Team Challenge puts focus on big picture - frame by frame

Whatever the sport, there’s a common thread between them all.

Teamwork.

Yes, the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. That old axiom has been proven over and over again – a collection of superstars isn’t necessarily superior to a strong-willed team committed to working together and bringing out each other’s strengths.

So when Fox Valley Park District organizers created a new all-inclusive, team-oriented event, they were sure to emphasize the importance of having all hands on deck to most effectively blend and complement the talents each individual brought.

Thus, the Gladiator Team Challenge was born at the Vaughan Athletic Center. In the big picture are 10-person teams. The little pullout photos are those of each team member’s specialty.

“Agility, accuracy, speed, strength, flexibility and strategy,” said event organizer Amy Joerger. “We want to cover all areas so teams will be evenly matched. A team that is balanced and versatile has the best chance at winning.”

The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Vaughan Center and feature 10-person teams competing in a variety of drills and races designed to test the skills (and cheering ability) of all involved.

In other words, you don’t have to be agile as a gymnast while also being able to lift 300 pounds – that’s why you have teammates.

“Every team member brings a certain benefit,” said Joerger. “It’s a lot of fun to see teammates encouraging each other and the camaraderie that develops.”

Among the challenges each team will confront are relays, obstacle courses, circuits and tug-of-war (requiring collective efforts and cooperation from the entire team at once). Drills such as a basketball throw (like a baseball challenge, only bigger) will measure accuracy, while the most flexible players will bend backward in a limbo competition.

It’s sure to produce instant rivalries – maybe even a little trash talk. But mostly, it’s designed for good-spirited fun and fitness in the name of athletic competition.

“You should be in good enough shape to run, but it’s more about what strengths you bring to the table for your team,” said Joerger. “Even if you’re not the fastest or strongest, you can bring a clever strategy and other abilities as your skill set.”

Each team will be assigned a personal trainer from the Vaughan Center as its leader. And though the event is scheduled to run from 2 to 7:30 p.m., those five-plus hours aren’t all spent in the pursuit of being the greatest gladiator.

“This is as much a social event as it is a competition,” said Joerger. “It’s a great way to meet and interact with like-minded people.”

It’s a great opportunity for team-building among families, neighbors, friends, co-workers and companies to indulge their competitive spirit and combine it with good old-fashioned fun. Participants can assemble teams on their own and sign up, or simply register as individuals and be “drafted” as teams are being formed.

May the best team win!
