With funding aid from federal and state grants administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Fox Valley Park District has developed a 48-mile, interconnected network of premier trails for biking, hiking and walking including:

    Closures & Maintenance

    Please note only upcoming or active maintenance or closures are listed below. If nothing is listed, that trail is fully open.

    Illinois Prairie Path
    The Illinois Prairie Path is closed and impassable at the intersection of Indian Trail and High Street due City of Aurora construction of traffic signals, a pedestrian and trail crossing, and other improvements along Indian Trail at High Street. Construction and the resulting Prairie Path closure is anticipated to continue at least through fall. No alternate route is available at this time.     Fox River Trail West
    The section of Fox River Trail West in North Aurora between State Street and Interstate-88 will be temporarily closed for repaving on Thursday, Oct. 31 and Friday, Nov. 1, and pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured slightly to the side of the path. Signage will be posted both days. Anticipated Completion Date: Nov. 1

    Fox Metro Water Reclamation District is performing necessary utility work along the Fox River Trail West, though the trail remains open. Please use caution when navigating the trail as some areas have been temporarily placed back as “gravel patch.” Walk your bike in these areas and be alert for changing trail conditions. Permanent asphalt patches will be installed and turf restoration will be completed in the coming weeks.  Anticipated Completion Date: TBD

    Virgil Gilman Trail
    Kane County Department of Transportation is performing trail crossing improvements on the Virgil Gilman Trail at Montgomery Road between JacksonSt. and S. Union St. causing the trail to be closed. No alternate bike route is available. Anticipated Completion Date: October 2024

    Park Guidelines

    Animals

    All dogs must be restrained by a leash not longer than six feet.

    Fishing

    All persons fishing shall abide by all game laws of the state of Illinois and possess a valid Illinois Fishing License as required by law with proper game stamps.

    Hunting

    No hunting, mistreatment of animals or trapping is allowed anywhere within the Park System.

    Alcohol

    With the exception of Cool Acres facility (with proper application), no alcoholic beverages are allowed in the Park System.

    Motorized Vehicles

    Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the nature trails, off a paved roadway or parked on the grass.

    Boats

    No motorized boats, sailboards or jet skis allowed on any water under Park District control. No motorized model boats or airplanes.

    Rollerskating/Rollerblading

    No rollerskating or rollerblading on tennis courts. Skating is allowed at Hupp Skate Park, located at the corner of Illinois Avenue and Orchard Road.

    Fires

    Fires are allowed only in proper receptacles.

    Fox Valley Park District provides outdoor venues ideal for a variety of special events. The Waubonsie Lake Trail and Gilman Trail serve as scenic routes for hosting 5K runs, walk-a-thons, bike races and more. Groups are welcome to reserve any of our parks for gatherings of all sizes.
