Enjoy art in the park thanks to a recent collaboration between the Fox Valley Park District (FVPD) and Aurora Public Art Commission. FVPD’s one-year-old Blackhawk Park features the first outdoor public art display in the District’s 71-year history, adding another dimension to the many amenities offered to the community.
The four sculptures, added in the summer of 2018, appeal to all ages and complement the park and its long history. Blackhawk Park was once the location of the old West Aurora High School – and in addition to the newly added artwork, it features an open lawn for unstructured play, an innovative science-themed playground, splash pad and unique shelter reminiscent of the school that once stood.
Local artists, Kai Schulte and Bill McGrath, were the first artists chosen to share their vision and style with the residents of Aurora. The Park District will continue to work with Aurora Public Art Commission to source new artists and pieces for the community to enjoy.
“I hope children get to see my sculptures and become motivated to start an interest in the arts,” said Kai Schulte. Schulte’s unique style of fabricating metal to create sculptures is something he grew to love as a child – and he’s hoping to inspire others through his creations.
The public art display is not only aesthetically pleasing but allows the community the ability to explore deeper meaning or perception within each sculpture – as well as enhancing spaces and allowing artists to connect with the community.
